Sabbath Blessings

At first, I saw God as my observer, my judge, keeping track of the things I did wrong, to know whether I merited heaven or hell when I die. He was out there, sort of like a president. I recognised His picture when I saw it, but I didn’t know Him. But later on, when I met Christ, it seemed as though life were rather like a bike ride, but it was a tandem bike, and I noticed that Christ was in the back helping me pedal. I don’t know just when it was that He suggested we change places, but life has not been the same since. When I had control, I knew the way. It was rather boring, but predictable, it was the shortest distance between two points. But when He took the lead, He knew delightful long cuts, up mountains, and through rocky places at breakneck speeds. It was all I could do to hang on! Even though it looked like madness, He said, “Pedal!” I worried and was anxious and asked, “Where are you taking me?” He laughed and didn’t answer, and I started to learn to trust. I forgot my boring life and entered into the adventure, and when I said, “I’m scared,” He’d lean back and touch my hand. I gained love, peace, acceptance;

Back when the telegraph was the fastest method of long-distance communication, a young man applied for a job as a Morse Code operator. Answering an ad in the newspaper, he went to the office that was listed. When he arrived, he entered a large, busy office filled with noise and clatter, including the sound of the telegraph in the background. A sign on the receptionist’s counter instructed job applicants to fill out a form and wait until they were summoned to enter the inner office. The young man filled out his form and sat down with the seven other applicants in the waiting area. After a few minutes, the young man stood up, crossed the room to the door of the inner office, and walked right in. Naturally, the other applicants perked up, wondering what was going on. They muttered among themselves that they hadn’t heard any summons yet. They assumed that the young man who went into the office had made a mistake and would be disqualified. Then, finally, they arrive, the ones for whom He would do anything. They embrace and visit, then eat a light lunch and reminisce about how things used to be. Some moments are quiet, others joyful, and at one point, they break into singing. But all too soon, it is over. Then the man with the keys closes the heavy doors. The key turns in the lock, marking the end of a special day. He’s alone again because He knows that most of His visitors will not have any contact with Him again;
