The gift was simple…the gift was small… But the promise it held was larger than life! What made it so special was that it was a gift from Mary Em’s grandmother. Gram had wrapped it in a beautiful scrap of red silk scarf. Mary Em rushed to open it, but when the gift fell out, she just looked at it. It was just a seed – a tiny black seed. Why did Gram leave her a seed before she died? Mary Em was eight, and her Gram had said she would be leaving soon on a trip to Heaven. Gram assured her that before she left, she would leave her a special gift…a gift beyond imagination. The little girl clung to the promise of the gift as she saw her grandmother begin to fade away. The cancer had made her so thin and frail, but Gram still smiled and said Jesus would be traveling with her on this trip. Even now, two weeks after Gram had left on her “new journey”, as she had called it, Mary Em clung to the promise. But a seed…? What had Gram been thinking? During World War II, a US Marine was separated from his unit on a Pacific Island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and the crossfire, he had lost touch with his comrades. Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly, he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realised that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed. As he waited, he prayed, “Lord, if it be your will, please protect me. Whatever your will, though, I love you and trust you. Amen.” After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He thought, “Well, I guess the Lord isn’t going to help me out of this one.” Then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave. There’s a pretty little legend that I would like to tell of the birth and death of Jesus, found in this lowly shell. If you examine closely, you’ll see that you find here four nail holes and a fifth one made by a Roman’s Spear. On one side, the Easter Lily, its centre is the star that appeared unto the wisemen and led them from afar. The Christmas poinsettia etched on the other side reminds us of His birthday, our Happy Christmastide. Now break the centre open and here you will release the five white doves awaiting to spread Good Will and Peace. This simple little symbol, Christ left for you and me to help us spread, and here you will release the five white doves, awaiting to spread Goodwill his Gospel through all eternity. I am already loved—even when I mess up, God still loves me. God’s love is unchanging. I cannot earn more of God’s love, and I can’t be disqualified from receiving His love. God’s love doesn’t lesson, or increase based on what I do or don’t do. God’s love is unconditional—it’s not based upon conditions of performance, gifting, ability, beauty or spiritual goodness. I am already loved—fiercely, immeasurably and without exception. He is always wooing me to a deeper intimacy. He loves me; He hears me when I pray; He sees me—the good and ugly. He knows me—every intricate detail, the very core of who I am (even better than I do), and He still loves me. Nothing in all creation can separate me from His love.
