Isn’t It Strange?

Isn’t It Strange?

Isn’t it strange how a twenty-dollar bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to church, but such a small amount when you go shopping? Isn’t it strange how two hours seem so long when you’re at church, and how short they seem when you’re watching a good movie? Isn’t it strange that you can’t find a word to say when you’re praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend? Isn’t it strange how difficult and boring it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel? Isn’t it strange how everyone wants front-row tickets to concerts or games, but they do whatever is possible to sit at the last row in Church? Isn’t it strange how we need to know about an event for Church two or three weeks before the day, so we Can we include it in our agenda, but we can adjust it for other events in the last minute? Isn’t it strange how difficult it is to learn a fact about God to share it with others, but how easy it is Is it to learn, understand, extend and repeat gossip? Isn’t it strange how we believe everything that magazines and newspapers say, but

A Special Message

A Special Message

After the usual hymns, the church’s pastor slowly stood up, walked over to the pulpit, and, before he gave his message, briefly introduced a guest minister who was in the service that evening. The pastor told the congregation that the guest minister was one of his dearest childhood friends. He wanted him to have a few moments to greet the church and share whatever he felt would be appropriate for the service. With that, an elderly man stepped up to the pulpit and began to speak.” A father, his son, and a friend of his son were sailing off the Pacific coast,” he began, “when a fast approaching storm blocked any attempt to get back to the shore. The waves were so high that even though the father was an experienced sailor, he could not keep the boat upright, and the three were swept into the ocean as the boat capsized.” The old man hesitated for a moment, making eye contact with two teenagers who were, for the first time since the service began, looking somewhat interested in his story. The aged pastor continued, “Grabbing a rescue line, the father had to make the most excruciating decision of his life: to which boy he would throw the other end of the lifeline. He had only a few seconds to make

Darts & Jesus

Darts & Jesus

Dr. Smith was known for his elaborate object lessons. One particular day, Sally walked into the college class and knew they were in for a fun day. On the wall was a big target, and on a nearby table were many darts. Dr. Smith told his students to draw a picture of someone that they disliked or someone who had made them angry, and he would allow them to throw darts at the person’s picture, if they wished. Sally’s girlfriend drew a picture of a girl who had stolen her boyfriend.  Another friend drew a picture of his little brother. Sally drew a picture of a former friend, putting a great deal of detail into her drawing, even drawing pimples on the face. Sally was pleased with the overall effect she had achieved. The class lined up and began throwing darts. Some of the students threw their darts with such force that their targets were ripped apart. Sally looked forward to her turn and was filled with disappointment when Dr. Smith, because of time limits, asked the students to return to their seats. As Sally sat thinking about how angry she was because she didn’t have a chance to throw any darts at her target, Dr. Smith began removing the target from the wall. Underneath the Target was a picture

A Faithful Giver

A Faithful Giver

Due to a lack of sufficient income to cover church expenses, a local grain elevator owner volunteered to take his church’s treasurer position if, for one year, the church would require no report from him. The Board was puzzled, but knowing him to be an honest man who processed most of their grain, they granted it. At the end of the year, the new treasurer gave a glowing report: The church’s indebtedness on the building had been paid, there were no outstanding bills, salaries were increased, and a balance of $7,000! They asked him for an explanation of their new prosperity. “Most of you bring your grain to me,” he replied, “and when I paid you, I simply withheld 10% and gave it to the church in your name. You never missed it! See now what we could do for the Lord if we each were only willing to give 10% back!” Meditation: “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” –

The Stranger

The Stranger

A few months before I was born, my dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around to welcome me into the world a few months later. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in our family. Mum taught me to love the Word of God, and Dad taught me to obey it. But the stranger was our storyteller. He could weave the most fascinating tales. Adventures, mysteries, and comedies were daily conversations. He could hold our whole family spellbound for hours each evening. He was like a friend to the whole family. He took Dad, my brother, and me to our first major league baseball game. He was always encouraging us to see the movies, and he even made arrangements to introduce us to several movie stars. The stranger was an incessant talker. Dad didn’t seem to mind, but sometimes Mum would quietly get up while the rest of us were enthralled with one of his stories of faraway places- go to her room, read her Bible, and pray. I wonder now if she ever prayed that the stranger would leave. You see, my Dad ruled our household
