Like the little old lady who returned your wallet yesterday.
Like the taxi driver who told you that your eyes light up the world, when you smile.

LauraLee, our 11-month old, has been really focusing on her walking! She will be 1 in a few weeks (where has the last year gone?) and she decided about 6 weeks ago that walking looked like something she wanted to figure out! This is my 4th walker and so I’ve not been rushing her, but I have been intently watching the process. She’s wobbly. She falls a lot. She sometimes needs a hand to hold sometimes just a pinkie or finger for confidence. She prefers to walk towards someone who is reaching out their arms for her. She’s bumped and scraped from obstacles. When she hits her head (or any other body part) it doesn’t seem to hurt as much as normal because she’s so focused on her destination. But, most importantly, she keeps getting up and trying again. Things I’ve noticed about those of us around her. We clap when she takes steps (even if it’s just one or two). We reach out to help her up when

He said, “Everything matters in life, some things a little and some things a lot, we just don’t know which is which.” And I believed him. Now if I may, I would like to relate a personal experience that occurred when I was a motorcycle officer that strengthened this belief and taught a young man that everything in life does indeed matter. I was a motorcycle officer with the Los Angeles Police Department and I was working speed complaints out of West Traffic Division. On the 6th of January, 1986, I was working a speed complaint on one of the streets in the hills of Bel-Air. It was around 9:30 in the morning. I was stopped at the base of a hill and had set up my radar on the handlebar of my motorcycle and was watching the traffic coming down the hill. This was a residential area and the road was narrow with numerous curves and was posted at 25 miles per hour. I had just finished writing a couple of tickets when

Mom in her nightgown, Dad in his boxers, and I in my racecar pajamas stood in our back yard watching flames lick the starlit sky. It was an eerie sight. The largest, most prestigious house in our very middle-class community was on fire. The next morning Dad and I walked down the road to check out the damage. Our neighbors, who beat us to the scene, were already gawking at the white, two-story icon, now a smoldering pile of ruins. The chimney still stood like a “Washington Monument “to its former glory. It was hard for me to believe. Such a stately house, the nicest on our little street, was a heap of coals. I watched trails of smoke still rising from blackened wood and stone. The ornate furniture, up-to-date appliances, and beautiful woodworking were completely charred. You know, houses aren’t the only thing

During the trip, we spent much of our time at a beautiful lake near the Bear River Mountains. One day our group planned various hikes through the majestic mountains with rugged terrain and peaks that soared to nearly 10,000 feet. With a pregnant wife and three young children, my family decided we’d stick to the flat, even surfaced three-quarter-mile hike. However, at the last minute, we decided to try the somewhat steep and rocky 8-mile hike-just to see how far we could make it before turning back. To my surprise, and with my 2-year-old son in arms nearly the entire trip, our family completed the eight-mile hike together. In life, we are often faced with challenges and opportunities that are difficult and often seem impossible. However, our potential and capacity is amazing. Many times we underestimate or do not realize what we can do. Many times we put self-imposed limits on ourselves and fail to venture to the unknown or dare to do the impossible. Whether it’s fear, a lack of confidence, complacency, or
