The Window of Encouragement

Two men were very sick. They shared the same room in the hospital. One of them was lying in the bed near the only window in their room. Every day, the nurse and caregivers would let him spend some time sitting up in his bed to help draining the fluid from lungs. The other man had to spend all his days flat on his back.

Both men talked a lot about their life, families – everything they could think of. Whenever the first man was sitting by the window, he would give a detailed description of all that he saw outside the window. Every day, the other man eagerly looked forward to those moments when the beautiful picture of the world outside would help to brighten his world.

Exciting views of a park with a beautiful lake could be seen from the window of their room. Children delightfully played among ducks and swans. Couples walked arm in arm among beautiful flowers. The stunning city skyline was also in sight.

When the man by the window had been thoroughly describing all that was happening outside the window, the other man would close his eyes and imagine all the beautiful scenes of life that his roommate described to him.

One night the man, whose bed was near the window, died peacefully during sleep. This left his roommate very sad.

After a while, when the nurse came to visit him, he asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse agreed and kindly made the switch. When she left, the man slowly and painfully propped himself up on one elbow and took his first look at the world outside. He was stunned. The window was directly in front of a blank wall.

The next time the nurse came to check him, he told her about beautiful things outside the window that his roommate described to him. The nurse replied that his roommate was a blind man. She added that: “Probably he just tried to encourage you.”

Meditation: While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. – 2 Corinthians 4:18
